A Confessions Tag, To Tell the Truth (or not)

I picked up this tag from Marlene over at the SPIT, or Country Girl on the Chesapeake Bay.
It seemed like a fun tag and I didn't have anything else to blog today. So here are some random details you probably never knew about me, and may not have ever thought to ask. Here are the rules: Copy and paste the whole questionnaire and replace my answers with yours. You have to state and create a link for the blogger who tagged you. Pass to 4 other bloggers. Remember to inform them by commenting on their recent post. Last, answer each question with truth and nothing but the truth since this is a confession tag.
Have Fun!
.
1)What is your blogger name? Della Hill, not so terribly creative, eh?
2) When is your birthday? August 14. I actually was born the day before Elvis died.
3). How long have you been blogging? Since Dec. '07, that's what? 15 months?
4) Who tagged you? Marlene from Country Girl on the Chesapeake Bay. Who, by the way, entered my life as part of a pool of people that I generally make a point of not building close associations with. But over time rose above that pool to become someone that I have built not only a relationship with, but an amount of respect and love for. (I hope that makes sense, I mean it as a sincere compliment).
5) Tell me your 5 most favorite body parts? (Do you really want to know?) Honest answers, right? My legs, breasts, hair, eyes, ... um, can my legs count as 2?
6) What do you wish most for your birthday? Hmm... I don't wish for too much because I really am very blessed. How about being that much closer to completely debt free, and maybe a scuba diving trip to Cozumel, Mexico.
7) What color are your nails now? Totally natural, though I have been successfully battling my nail biting habit and an edge of white is showing on 9 of my 10 nails.
8) Any depressing thoughts lately? More than usual actually. I am really a very positive person. But things have been harder in my life as well as in our country lately, and it is affecting me. But not too much. I am still happy and have faith in a better world.
9) What's your next 1 month's plan? To get through the next month. To get back to running 3 or more times a week as well as strength training. To improve my budgeting and maybe take a scuba diving class.
10) At what age did you have your 1st crush? I vaguely remember my sisters teasing me about someone when I was 5, but the earliest I remember clearly was Adam Walters in the 7th grade.
Or maybe it was Cody Anderson in 6th grade....
11) Did you attend any school reunion after you graduated till now? Ri-ight. That would require a desire to see anyone from my graduating class. So there were maybe 2 or 3 people I wouldn't mind seeing again, including my English Teacher Mrs. Hampton/ Ms. Snyder, but even those people aren't worth suffering through a reunion for. (Sorry Mrs. Hampton, not even if Adam Walters was there).
12) Have you ever passed gas in public and pretended you didn't smell anything? (I'm stealing Marlene's answer for this one), No, not ever...if you believe that, I have some stock in AIG I want to sell you.
13) Are you a clean freak? Double ri-ight. I'm more likely to go to a reunion than make sure my bathroom is always clean. Lucky for me, I have a work at home husband who is a clean freak and I can count on him for more than his fair share of housework.
14) Which era do you wish you were born into? I often think it would have been pretty cool to be born in the time of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. But under 2 conditions; 1- That I get to be a lady, and not an indentured servant or peasant, and 2- that I not be born with a tendency to get bladder infections or an android pelvis, either of which would have already caused me a slow and painful death.
15) Are you a vegetarian? (again) Ri-ight. Yeah, and I've never farted in public either. Meat is good.
16) How many pillows do you sleep with at night? 2-3. 2 under my head and an occasional 3rd to cuddle with if Chris is still WoWing.
17) Are you a light sleeper or an I-don't-care-if -there's-a-bomb-here sleeper? What? There was a bomb? I must have missed it, I was sleeping.
18) Do you secretly wear comfortable granny panties when your man is not around? No. Absolutely not. I wear them all the time and there is no secret about it whatsoever. He is more surprised (rather pleasantly) once in a while when I don't.
19) What is your ultimate dream job? Being a motivational speaker/ parenting trainer.
20) What is it your hubby does that annoys you the most? He thinks he accepts feedback really well, but he doesn't really. Not when it comes from me anyway. So it's a good thing I have other ways of, um, influencing him.
21) What is your dream car? I don't really have one. Unless it's the one with no steering wheel that I blogged about >here<. Really, I'd just love to get my '84 Kawasaki LTD 700 running again. (Yes, it's a motorcycle). That would make me happier than anything.
22) Do you easily wake up in the morning? I'm sorry, what was the question? I didn't hear it because I was hitting the snooze bar for the 6th time. Did a bomb just go off in here?
23) Do you like hairy men? Hair, in general I don't mind. Random, out of place hairs make me itch for my tweezers. Long, dark hairs growing out of moles cause me to plan secret night time shaving parties, usually while the shavee is sleeping. But really, that's on anyone, including myself, not just men. (Except I don't shave myself in my sleep).
24) How about goatees on men? Yep, goatees are cute and sexy. Unless they have that villianous point, then no.
25) Which one would you prefer, 2 hour spa, 2 hour Thai Massage or 2 hour foot massage?
Can I opt for a facial?
26) Have you ever wished you had a different name other than your real name? In 4th grade I changed my name to Iva Dell, which is the name of the grandmother that I was named after. I went by Iva Dell for 3 years, mostly at school, before I went back to Della. But I had friends that called me Iva all the way though high school.
27) What is the most extreme sport you have ever done? Probably riding a motorcycle. I got my Kawasaki up to 110 mph on north bound I-15 passing Orem, Utah once. Unless Grandma is reading this, in which case I never got over 65 and may never have even ridden a motorcycle.
28) Do you prefer traveling in Europe or Asia? I'd love to go to either, having never been. But probably Europe to start.
29) What is your favorite food? Toss up between good Chinese Hot and Sour Soup and Chris' Cajun Chicken Penne. Ooohhhh, it's good.
30) What is the most embarrassing moment when you were out on a date? I can't think of any right off the top of my head. Maybe because I haven't dated anyone new in over 12 years. But if you want to hear the most embarrasing, -and funny- date story of all time, >click here<.
.
Kay, that's all. I hope you learned something new about me.
Please feel free to consider yourself tagged.

25 Random Things About Me

I keep getting tagged on Facebook with different notes.
One problem/blessing is that because I do 97% of my facebooking on my iPhone and almost none on my computer I can't access those notes or make my own.
I mean I could, but that would require sitting down to my computer, logging on to Facebook and spending at least 2 hours sucked in to poking, wall writing, group joining, becoming a fan, food fighting, Super poking, mafia wars, Little Green patching and responding to other notifications.
So, I'm just going to keep updating my status and checking on my friends with my beloved iPhone for now and I will (finally) post my list of 25 Random Things About Me right here.
.
  1. I almost never use the right shift key. I only use the left one, which means I hold it down and press any left hand key at the same time. Silly, yes. But that's why this is a random list.
  2. My all time favorite comfort food is Cherry Pepsi.
  3. I'm addicted to my iPhone. (Like you didn't already know).
  4. I have a level 80 holy priest on the Misha realm of World of Warcraft, plus several other toons (characters).
  5. I am a water snob. Meaning you could give me 3 glasses of water, one from the tap, one from a bottle like Arrowhead, and one from a bottle of Dasani or another water filtered by reverse osmosis filtration and I could tell you which is which.
  6. Even though I am picky about the flavor of my water, I won't drink Deer Park water, because I can only think about deer pee in my water. Why would you name a water that?
  7. I logged over 5oo miles running or walking in 2008.
  8. I can't log any miles right now because my nike+ sensor stopped working. (Aargh!)
  9. I got married when I was 19.
  10. I will celebrate my 12th wedding anniversary this April.
  11. I knew my husband for 5 weeks when we got engaged.
  12. I proposed to him.
  13. I had thought I would be single till I was at least 23. I was wrong.
  14. I am afraid of riding in a convertible unless it has a roll bar.
  15. I ride motorcyles, and personally own 2 of them.
  16. I have lived in 3 group homes as a Teaching Parent.
  17. I have had over 50 group home or foster children.
  18. There is NO number 18.
  19. For me, procrastination is not just a habit, it's a talent.
  20. I scheduled my C-section/ son's birth on John Stockton's birthday.
  21. I like hot sauce in my fry sauce.
  22. I love stand up comedy.
  23. I cracked my knee cap once, but have never broken a bone.
  24. I am an over plucker. I can't live without my tweezers. Any hair on my body is subject to removal by tweezers at any time. It's a miracle I still have eyebrows.
  25. My favorite Coldstone combination is this: Half chocolate, half cake batter ice cream; mixed in with brownies, cherry pie filling, pecans and fudge. Sometimes I double the cherry pie filling too. Mmmmm.....

.

So now you know more about me than you ever cared to know.

Did you actually learn something new?

I tag you.

10 Simple Things

I am picking up a tag from Ally.
Ironically, this isn't even the tag that she assigned to me, (which I swear I haven't forgotten about), but another one she had on her blog.
It is simply, 10 simple things that make me smile.
.
  1. Hugs that I didn't ask for.
  2. Getting pulled close with an arm around my waist while I am sleeping.
  3. My iphone
  4. Hearing a good song
  5. Getting e-mails that someone has commented on my Facebook
  6. Comments on my blog
  7. Sunbeams in Primary
  8. When everyone makes it to the bus on time
  9. Little moments when I know God answered a prayer
  10. When my puppy lays his head on my chest and gives me puppy dog eyes

.

Alas, I could go on. But I will refrain for today.

Sooner or later I'll get around to doing 25 random things about me.

Hmm, probably later.

Have a great day!

Tag: The Interview

I picked up a voluntary tag from my friend Marlene over at "A Country Girl on the Chesapeake Bay".
For this tag Marlene asked me 5 interview questions.
I answered them and it turned out kind of long.
So just in case you didn't already know everything you ever wanted to know about me, please read on and enjoy getting to know me a little better, thanks to Marlene's questions.
.
.
My Blog tag interview questions
1. Being relatively new to Virginia, what would you say are the biggest contrasts to your state of origin?
A.
I’m from Utah, and I think anyone who has spent much time in Utah would say there is no other place like it.
One of the first and most obvious differences between Utah and Virginia is that Utah has a black population of maybe 1%.
While there are many Hispanics and Polynesians in Utah, There were 2 black kids in my entire high school.
Here in VA the black population is much higher. Which adds cultural flavor that I love and think is great for my kids.
The other obvious difference is the presence of religion.
Religion and beliefs are very strong in both states, but manifest very differently.
In Utah, LDS, or Mormonism, is the primary faith, being that over 50% of the state’s population are LDS.
However, I think because Mormons are afraid of offending anyone they rarely discuss or share their beliefs outside of church or related groups.
This also leads to a sense of “Mormon Cliques” because many mormons just don’t know how to relate to others without fear of being offensive.
Here in VA there are different churches all over the place. It is hard to find 2 people who actually attend the same one. But, many people, even complete strangers, will gladly talk with you about Jesus.
It is very common to hear “God bless you”, or “Have a blessed day”. One day I asked someone “How are you?” in passing and received the answer “Too blessed to be depressed. Too anointed to be disappointed!”
If a stranger becomes aware of another’s problem or concern they readily offer to pray for them. One time I had an employee of a store in the mall “lift me up” by praying with me out loud right in the middle of the store. (I wasn’t ready for that one).
I love that people here are so willing to share their faith so openly. It is very welcoming and really, Utah would be an even better place if people did that more.
Oh, and mountains. I miss Utah’s mountains. But I love the beach too.
2. Della, you run marathons and log a lot of running time...Have you always been an athlete? How did you get your start in being physically fit and what advice would you offer us couch potatoes out there?
A.
Have I always been an athlete? Hahahahahahahaha!
Uh, no. I used to hate any kind of physical activity.
I started running, oh, about 8 months ago. In that time I have run 2 half marathons and try to run 2 or 3 times a week. But honestly, I’m pretty new to this.
I got started being active by getting a dog.
That wasn’t really my intention when I got the dog, but I found that my dog was happier and my furniture remained more intact when Toby got walked everyday.
Before long Toby was keeping me accountable. He knew when it was walk time and expected it. So I walked. Slowly I worked my way up from ½ a mile a day, to 1 mile, to 2 to 3.
Then I sped up and walked faster.
One critical component was my Nike+, (read about it here). It motivated me to increase my distance and speed.
Then I was walking so fast I was working up a sweat, so I started changing into workout clothes, and once I was in workout clothes why not run?
I started small, a mile at a time. And even when I increased my distance to 2 and 3 miles, I would still stop to walk every mile.
Someone told me about an upcoming half marathon, I signed up, downloaded a training schedule and stuck to it.
I think the trick to any exercise routine is #1, do it at your own pace. Don’t try to live up to someone else’s standard or compare yourself to anyone else. Encourage yourself to step up the volume and intensity, but only as you are comfortable with, and can stay committed to.
And #2, just stick to it. Find a schedule you are comfortable with and keep with it. No excuses.
Let me add that last year I lost 30 pounds and have kept it off. But I didn’t start running until after I lost the weight. I lost 30 pounds by eating less and walking.
3. You are such a busy "Della", involved in a multitude of activites...can you share with us your favorite healthy eating tips for "life on the go"?
A.
I can tell you what I do, but they are pretty much the same things you have heard already.
I eat 1 bowl of low sugar, whole grain cereal for breakfast every morning. (Honey Nut Cheerios and Rice Chex are some of my favorites).
This jumpstarts my metabolism and holds off hunger during the morning. I also tend to eat a smaller lunch when I’ve had breakfast.
One of my favorite lunches is a can of brothy soup. Campbells Selects Italian Wedding Soup is awesome.
Soup takes a few minutes to eat and has a lot of hand to mouth motion so I feel like I am eating a lot. Plus the warm broth helps my tummy feel full.
One rule I have for myself: If you can get it through a drive through, you shouldn’t get it at all.
One of the critical components to my 30 pound weight loss was that I went from eating fast food 3 or 4 times a week to never.
If I know I am going to be out and busy at lunch time I grab a Special K Protein Meal Bar. I like the Chocolate, chocolate chip ones. It tastes a little like a candy bar supplemented with sawdust, but the chocolate makes it worth it.
They help me feel full and tide me over till I can have that bowl of soup.
I also love Subway.
Subway does not count as fast food.
I have made changes even in my sandwiches though. I now get spicy mustard instead of mayo, and instead of eating the whole footlong like I used to, I eat half and save the rest for another meal.
I do load my Subway with veggies and never feel bad about the oil and vinegar.
How to not snack during the day: Don’t have any snacks available.
You can’t eat what’s not there.
Or make yourself a list of approved snacks. Pick something from the list when you are peckish. This way you still have choices, but aren’t eating things you shouldn’t.
Another good snack is Special K protein water. I get the little powder packets and add it to a bottle of water. (This is much cheaper than the whole bottles).
For dinner: cut you calories in half by not having seconds. It takes a little willpower to not load your plate again, but you really don’t need it.
My last tip goes against traditional weight loss ideas. Some people say you shouldn’t eat after 7, but I always have a bedtime snack, and it’s usually chocolate.
No full size candy bars, no bowls of ice cream, (okay, maybe once in a while). I usually have a small handful of Hershey kisses to savor and reward myself at bedtime.
I can’t speak for you, but I need chocolate. Maybe I would be 5 pounds lighter if I didn’t do that, but it’s a trade off I am willing to make.
4. What motivated you and your husband to become professional teaching parents and do you feel this is a life long calling?
A.
When I was a teenager I received a special blessing from a Patriarch at my church. The blessing gave me a lot of guidance for my life. One of the things he said in the blessing was “You will be called to work with the youth”.
I didn’t really understand what that meant. I thought it meant I would teach the teenage Sunday school class, (which so far I have never done).
I understand now that it meant I would do what I am doing: Being a foster parent or teaching parent.
Because I didn’t know what God had in mind for me specifically I had no plan to get here. But God did and he led me along the way.
It started, I suppose, several years ago with a desire to be a foster parent.
Chris and I went through training and became foster parents. We found out pretty quick that we had a natural knack for it, and really liked it. Enough that Chris started wondering if it would be possible for him to quit his regular job and work with kids full time.
The agency we did foster care through had an opening for teaching parents in one of their group homes. We applied, were hired, and we haven’t looked back since.
We lived and worked in 2 group homes, (owned by the same agency), in Utah for about 2 ½ years. Then one day Chris saw an ad in the paper for an agency in Richmond, VA that used the same teaching model we were certified in. We interviewed, and next thing we knew we were moving 2500 miles away from my home.
We worked at that agency in Richmond for 3 years.
After 3 years in Richmond I got a phone call from a caseworker in Virginia Beach that we had been working with. She asked me if Chris and I would be interested in moving to the beach and opening what would be a pilot home for a new kind of foster home.
We jumped at the chance and have been here for a year and a half now.
There are now 3 homes that are doing what we are doing, which is basically having 2 full time parents who are trained to work with tougher kids. A fourth home is getting ready to open next month.
We love it. There are some really hard days, but we are very happy here.
All along the way, with every step and every move, I knew God was taking us where he wanted us to be. And I tried very hard to do the work as well as I could.
I know I am not perfect and I make mistakes at my job just like everyone does. But I believe that I am doing what God wants me to do.
As for this being my lifelong calling, I think in one way or another it probably is. Down the road God may have different ideas for me, but I expect he will have me use these talents that he gave me to do whatever he calls me to do.
I feel so blessed that I have found my calling and that I get to work with these kids. I have worked with some absolutely amazing young men and women and I have seen miracles happen in their lives.
People tell me all the time how much they admire me for what I do and the time and love I give to these kids, but they don’t understand that I am the one who is on the receiving end.
I am so blessed in my job, my life, and my home. I don’t have to do this, I get to do this.
It’s awesome.
5. Tell us something that the average person might not know about you that would completely surprise them.
A.
Do you remember when you were in Junior High there was that obnoxious kid who dressed funny, looked funny, always said weird things and was generally annoying? Kind of a “Screech” from Saved by the Bell?
That was me.
I was the most obnoxious, annoying, geeky, naïve adolescent ever.
I had confidence, so I wasn’t afraid of saying and doing what I wanted, but I really was trying to figure out how I fit in to the world, and had to deal with my share of teasing along the way.
In the end I am grateful for the person I have always been.
I always had good friends and I am glad that I never conformed completely to what others thought I should be.
.
.
That’s my interview.
I hope you had fun reading it. I had fun doing it, even though it took 2 days to finish, (partly because I have been sick).
If you want to be tagged with an interview leave a comment that says “Interview me” and I will send you 5 interview questions for you to answer and post on your blog.
.
Love you all.

Picture Tag

Well, what do you know? 2 posts in one day!
I got tagged by Pikes Pickles to do this. It seems simple enough.
The object of the picture tag is to:
1) Choose the 4th folder where you store your pictures on your computer
2) Select the 4th picture in the folder
3) Explain the picture
4) Tag 4 people to do the same
NO CHEATING! (cropping, editing, etc!)
I had a problem though, I have an extra folder in my picture file that doesn't actually have pics in it in the #2 spot, so I wasn't sure which folder was technically #4.
Solution: I am posting pics from both of the possible #4 folders.

This is my dog Samantha waiting by the back door to go out. This is not the best picture of her because when the pic is clearer and her ears are up she is a beautiful dog.

I am not sure there is an explanation for this pic.

I took this picture less than half a mile from my house.

I call it Redneck Mailbox.

.

I tag the 4 coolest people who read my blog. (You know who you are).

I'm Pumpkin Pie

Pike's Pickles had this on her blog and I was curious, and had extra time, so I tried it.

I was surprised that with such a short quiz it gave me an answer that I found to be so accurate about me.

Or at least, I would like for it to be accurate about me.

You Are Pumpkin Pie

You're the perfect combo of uniqueness and quality.

You're able to relate to many types of people with many different tastes.

But you're by no means generic or ordinary.

In fact, you're one of the most original people around.

Those who like you are looking for something (or someone) special.

You tend confuse people when they first meet you. But you're not as complicated as you seem.

Even though you have a lot of spice and flavor to you, you're never overpowering.

You are a calm and comforting force in people's lives.

Try it out and tell me what you are.

Another bloggie, Ally Pike, (yes, related to Pike's Pickles, but not the same person), posted a self questionaire on her blog and tagged anyone that wanted to to do it and post it on their blog.
So I did.
.
.
I think. . . therefore I am.
.
I know. . . God loves me.
.
I want. . . to buy a house.
.
I have. . . a really, really awesome family.
.
I wish. . . . . . well, . . that’s a conversation I have to finish having with my husband before I can post about it.
.
I hate. . . walking on spilled sugar or salt in bare feet. And having my toes stepped on.
.
I miss. . . Chet, Liz, and all the other members of my family that I don’t get to see much.
.
I fear. . . the economy getting worse.
.
I feel. . . sore from my 8 mile run yesterday.
.
I love. . . my job.
.
I hear. . . My dog eating, and Ben 10 on tv.
.
I smell. . . not very well. My olfactory senses are not so strong.
.
I search. . . for good restaurants to have lunch at with my husband.
.
I wonder. . . if people like me as much as I think they do, or if they are just being nice.
.
I regret . . .buying that stupid Jetta. And losing touch with good friends.
.
I care. . . genuinely about every child that has ever come into my home.
.
I always. . . try to share love with those around me.
.
I am not. . . perfect (yet).
.
I believe. . . in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
.
I dance. . . in my head, all the time.
.
I sing. . . to myself and along with my ipod.
.
I don't always. . . remember what I’m supposed to be doing at the moment.
.
I win. . . at love.
.
I lose. . . at punctuality.
.
I never. . . feel bad about taking time for me.
.
I listen. . . to the spirit.
.
I read. . . not as much as I used to- and in the bathroom.
.
I am happy about. . . my life.
.
.
Ok, I now tag YOU!

Jordan, the Goddess of Sewing tagged me. What this means, to the best of my understanding, is that she was tagged and had to answer the following questions on her blog. Now it's my turn to answer these questions, after which I will tag at least 2 people to do the same on their blogs.

I now tag (drumroll)
